Albert J. Parkhouse Inventor of the First Coat Hanger
Todayââ¬â¢s wire coat hanger was inspired by a clothes hook patented in 1869 by O. A. North of New Britain, Connecticut but it wasnt until 1903 that Albert J. Parkhouse, an employee of Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company in Jackson, Michigan, created the device that we now know as the coat hanger in response to co-workersââ¬â¢ complaints of too few coat hooks. He bent a piece of wire into two ovals with the ends twisted together to form a hook. Parkhouse patented his invention, but it is not known if he profited from it. In 1906, Meyer May, a mens clothierà of Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first retailer to display his wares on his wishbone-inspired hangers. Some of these original hangers can be seen at theà Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Meyer May House in Grand Rapids. Schuyler C. Hulett received a patent in 1932 for an improvement which involved cardboard tubes screwed onto the upper and lower portions to prevent wrinkles in freshly laundered clothes. Three years later, Elmer D. Rogers created a hanger with a tube on the lower bar which is still used today. Thomas Jeffersonà invented the early wooden coat hanger along with other inventions like the hideaway bed, the calendar clock, and the dumbwaiter. More About Albert Parkhouse Gary Mussell, great-grandson of Parkhouse, wrote this about his great-grandfather: Albert J. Parkhouse was a born tinkerer and inventor, his brother-in-law, Emmett Sargent, used to tell me when I was young. Albert was born in St. Thomas, Canada, just across the border from Detroit, Michigan, in 1879. His family migrated down to the town of Jackson when he was a boy, and it was there that he met and eventually married Emmetts older sister, Emma. Their daughter, Ruby, my grandmother, often told me he was quiet, modest, unassuming, and fun-loving to friends, but that Mom was really the boss in the family. Both Albert and Emma rose through the ranks to be leaders in the local Masons and Eastern Star organizations. John B. Timberlake founded Timberlake Sons, a small sole proprietorship, in 1880 and by the turn of the century he had managed to collect several dozen enterprising inventor-type employees such as Parkhouse who made wire novelties, lampshades, and other ubiquitous devices for their customer clients. If anything truly unique was developed by the individual employee, wrote Mussell, Timberlake applied for a patent on it, and the company reaped whatever fame and reward that followed. It should be noted that this is a traditional employer-employee relationship in American business, and it is especially prevalent in late 19th Century firms, and even practiced by such well-known inventors as Thomas Edison, George Eastman, and Henry Ford. Todays Coat Hangers Todays coat hangers are made of wood, wire, plastic, and rarely from rubber substances and other materials. Some are padded with fine materials such asà satin for expensive clothes. The soft, plush padding helps protect clothes from shoulder dents that wire hangers may make. A caped hanger is an inexpensive wire clothing hanger covered in paper. They are most often used by dry cleaners to protect clothes after cleaning.

Why I Be A Doctoral Degree Essay - 1118 Words
Itââ¬â¢s hard for me to come up with specific examples for why I choose to get a doctoral degree. In all honesty, itââ¬â¢s hard for me to come up with a reason that I went to college at all. I am the only member of my momââ¬â¢s family to graduate high school. College was never talked about. When I graduated highschool, I went into the military. I knew I wanted something more than to take over my mother used car business, but I had no idea on what I wanted to do. I was medically discharged from the Navy, and then had to figure out what I wanted to do. I went to film school and didnââ¬â¢t like it. I then tried a semester in business, but it didnââ¬â¢t seem to fit my personality. I remembered a time when I tutored inner city kids in Chicago. I felt like that I was making a difference, so I decided to go to school for education. I walked into my first practicum, and havenââ¬â¢t looked back since. But, the question was ââ¬Å"why am i pursuing this advanced d egree?â⬠Well it didnââ¬â¢t hit me until I was going for my masters degree. I was doing the work and it all seemed wrong. It seemed like what I was learning was going to hurt education, not help it. I decided then, that I would go further and try to change the trend. That technology is supposed to be a tool, not the end all. That if we make kids relient on technology it was going to kill their problem solving skills, their coping skills, and their personal relation skills. A response to Mark Twainââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Lowest Animalâ⬠(1896) By: Thanusha Sritharan Is the human race cruel or just selfish? The human race is one of many distinct species in the world. Human beings share most of their traits and behaviors with other animals. The act of cruelty and violence to one another is one of the behaviors that humans differ from animals. We will write a custom essay sample on Human Race or any similar topic only for you Order Now In the essay ââ¬Å"The Lowest Animalâ⬠(1896), Mark Twain claims that man can be cruel and wasteful in his lifetime. Although his statement does not imply to all humans, the moral sense enables us to do wrong. With the proof of news reports and media it is evident that man is cruel to animals, the society and to their household. When compared to people, dogs are known as a manââ¬â¢s best friend. Even though they are four-legged canines, dogs have a heart like gold. Dogs are also known for their ability to help people with visual impairments. They are very loyal and lovable to their owners and others. A study conducted by Mark Franz states that dogs happen to have a higher level of decency when compared to humans. In Toronto, a 32-year old woman, Alice Marcial, strangled her pet dog Jacob to death. This news article is very relevant to Mark Twainââ¬â¢s quote ââ¬Å"Of all animals man is the one that is cruel. He is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing itâ⬠(pg. 238). Not only do humans find pleasure by inflicting pain on animals but they also engage in public killings as a source of entertainment. Many people in the world live their life according to their sets of beliefs and values. In the world we live in today people feel the need to judge and have a say in others life choices. In Papua New Guinea, a mob tortured a group of woman who was accused of witchcraft. This mob tortured this group alive in front of hundreds of horrified witnesses including their family. To support this news article a quote my Mark Twain can be used, ââ¬Å"Man is a religious animalâ⬠(pg. 237). This quote proves the fact that a man loves his religion and he only plays by his religion. Although witchcraft is not a religion it is something that group believed in. The act of shunning someone based on their religious choices is morally wrong and should not lead to any form abuse or death. In third world countries people abuse children in my different ways just to teach them a lesson. This happens every single day to millions of children around the world. Child abuse is something not to be taken easily. It is seen as a major social problem and it is one of many causes of the childrenââ¬â¢s death. For example, in Saudi Arabia a five-year-old Saudi girl was beaten to death by her father when in front of her entire family. There was no specific reason for this abuse but it cost the life of a five-year old girl. This news article can be supported by a Mark Twain quote, ââ¬Å"Man is a cruel animalâ⬠(pg. 237). This quote proves the fact that man could do anything to accomplish something regardless of who the victim is. With the proof of news reports and a study it is evident that man is descended from animals. Some people choose to do evil things even though they have conscious of what they are doing. A reason why people do this is because the moral sense enables men to do wrong. In the world we live today everyone makes mistakes. In fact this is not an excuse to make a cruel, unforgiving fault that could change yours or that personââ¬â¢s life. How to cite Human Race, Papers
